Construction of Rundāle Palace

Rastrelli's original design was based on the layout of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, and the palace was built as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland.
The first construction period lasted from 1736 until 1740, during which time the palace was built according to Rastrelli's original design. The palace was built using local materials, including bricks and limestone, and decorated with stucco, marble, and frescoes. The interior design was also completed during this time, featuring ornate furnishings, elegant chandeliers, and exquisite paintings.
In the late 18th century, after the collapse of the Duchy of Courland, the palace fell into disrepair and was used for various purposes, including as a school, a prison, and a granary. It was not until the 20th century that restoration work began on the palace.
Restoration of Rundāle Palace
In 1924, the Latvian government took over the palace and began restoring it to its former glory. The restoration work lasted for several decades, and the palace was finally opened to the public as a museum in 1972.
During the restoration, some changes were made to the palace's interior design. For example, the original silk wallpapers were replaced with replicas, and some of the original furnishings were replaced with similar items from the same period. Nevertheless, the palace has retained much of its original splendor and continues to amaze visitors with its beauty and elegance.
